Preparing for the guided tour means dressing for a damp, cool environment. Even if it is hot outside during the high season, the cave climate never changes. Proper footwear and a warm top are the two most critical items.

How cold is it inside Skocjan Caves?

The cave maintains a steady temperature of 12 °C (54 °F) in every season.

Because you are underground, the weather outside does not affect the interior. You will spend 90 to 120 minutes in this cool environment. The air is damp, which can make it feel slightly colder if you stop moving.

What shoes should I wear to Skocjan Caves?

Wear sturdy, non-slip walking shoes or hiking boots.

The standard guided tour covers roughly 3 kilometers of trail. You must walk down and up several hundred stairs. The ground is wet and the terrain is uneven. Do not wear sandals, smooth-soled shoes, or high heels.

What clothes do I need for the tour?

You need a warm fleece, sweater, or light jacket.

Long pants are recommended to keep your legs warm during the two-hour walk. In summer, you might prefer to wear a t-shirt and carry your jacket until you enter the cave.

Do I need to bring anything else?

There are no facilities available underground, so carry water with you. You will also need a camera or smartphone for the permitted photo zones outside the caves. If you have a student or senior ticket, carry your valid ID.

Should I bring an umbrella?

Bring a light rain jacket or umbrella if it is raining outside.

The walk from the ticket office to the cave entrance is exposed to the weather. You also walk outside when returning from the Big Collapse Doline to the visitor center. Inside the main cave, you will not need rain gear.

Can I take a large bag?

No, large bags are cumbersome on the narrow cave paths.

The walkways inside the canyon are narrow. The Cerkvenik Bridge is a small footbridge suspended 47 meters above the river. A small daypack is much safer and easier to carry.
